These days we’re all pulled in so many directions, it can be hard to find our balance. You may have tried self-help books or behavioral treatments and know that there is a part of you that remains untapped. Maybe you're struggling with communication or getting your needs met at work and in relationships while you think of everybody else first and put yourself last? Are you a new dad or raising kids while also supporting your own aging parents? You may be trying to live in an antiracist way in a world that doesn't always support that effort. It can all be so overwhelming and it might seem easier to avoid the problems in the world and in yourself, but that might have made things worse and now you’re struggling to find another way forward.
Psychotherapy offers an opportunity to work with another mind to help you access parts of yourself that are hard to understand on your own. Together we will work toward cultivating healthy engagement, making decisions with clarity and confidence, discovering and integrating deeper parts of yourself, and feeling more fully alive at work and in relationships.
I will tailor the therapy approach to meet your your needs. For instance, some people have a very specific treatment goal in mind and may benefit from structured approaches to reframe their thinking and change their behavior, others may need to process a past trauma in order to reduce its impact on their current life, and many people need a supportive space to go deeper and integrate aspects of themselves that they may have previously rejected or judged too harshly.
While considering the right approach for you I will draw on my training and experience with multiple different approaches to psychotherapy, including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), trauma-processing therapies like EMDR, and "third-wave" therapies like Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), and Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT), depth psychodynamic and Jungian analytic therapy approaches, and Internal Family Systems (IFS).
Individual psychotherapy
We will begin with an initial twenty minute consultation at no charge to see if I'm the right person for you to work with, and talk about scheduling. Regular psychotherapy sessions typically last 50 minutes and are held once per week or more frequently, depending on individual needs. The duration of therapy may be shorter or longer-term. The fee for treatment is $280 per session, after an initial 20 minute consultation which is free of charge.
Adjunct EMDR
Sometimes I work with other therapist to provide a brief trauma-focused intervention to support their longer term work with a client. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a brief, intensive intervention that can be helpful in processing certain kinds of traumatic experiences. It often works best in the context of a supportive psychotherapy that can help you integrate your experience with trauma processing and work through more complex issues that aren't amenable to this kind of approach. If your current therapist thinks you might benefit from a few sessions of focused EMDR treatment, our first step would be to sign a release of information to coordinate with them and determine if it could be helpful in your situation. We would then do a brief series of EMDR trauma processing sessions, but you would continue to work primarily with your current therapist after that.
